Mexico joins 50-in-5!

In 2023, the 50-in-5 Campaign was formally launched. It has since brought together over 20 countries from across many different regions and economic backgrounds with the ultimate goal of implementing safe, inclusive, and interoperable digital public infrastructure in 50 countries by the end of 2028.

Today, at a 50-in-5 best practices and learning exchange for participating countries, the campaign was honoured to formally welcome Mexico as the 23rd, and newest country to be part of the campaign. Joining the campaign underscores Mexico’s commitment to sharing best practices and learnings alongside other countries to help reduce costs, strengthen local capacities, and maximize the impact of public policies, to accelerate the implementation of safe, inclusive, and interoperable digital public infrastructure.

The Head of the Telecommunications and Digital Transformation Agency of Mexico, José Antonio Peña Merino indicated, “Public technology serves to enable people to exercise their rights; that is, it is driven by public utility and aims to close access gaps within the population.” This sentiment, and belief that technology, including DPI, can help close the digital divide both within and between countries, is integral to the campaign and underscores the importance of countries working together on digital public infrastructure.

Mexico’s Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency (known in Spanish as ATDT) firmly believes that digital public infrastructure is essential to build a more inclusive, dynamic, and resilient future. By joining this global campaign, Mexico is reaffirming their commitment to technological innovation at the service of social well-being, economic growth, and compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through 50-in-5’s network of countries, Mexico will be able to promote a digital transformation that will benefit the entire society.
